July Guest Speaker

Our speaker this month was Sheena Crossley, one of our regulars, who never fails to fill us with facts (useless or otherwise in her own words!) and information regarding the topic she is talking about.

This time is was herbs. During the first half of the talk, Sheena gave examples of the many herbs we can grow in our gardens, detailing their history, growing requirements, qualities, and their culinary and medicinal properties. A couple of quick and easy recipes were even thrown in! Some of the plants she mentioned we didn`t even know were classed as herbs. Sheena had brought a couple of
books with her that we were able to look through as well.

Following the break for tea and biscuits, Sheena produced the `bag of cuttings` that always accompanies her on her talks, and which illustrated all the examples of herbs she had talked about earlier. This bag always seems to have a never-ending supply of plant material and as each cutting was pulled out Sheena managed to convey even more information about each one. As a bonus, at the end of the talk we were able to take these cuttings home to propagate new plants for ourselves.

There was a very good turnout for Sheena`s talk, including some new faces who were interested in joining the Society, and we welcome them. Thank you to everyone who attended, to the tea ladies and those who helped with the washing up, and to Sheena for her usual easy to listen to, informative, interesting and often humorous talk.

PLEASE NOTE: There is no monthly meeting in August as we will focus on our summer show.

Our next talk will be on Wednesday 25th September at 7.30pm in the Llantonian Hall, when our speaker will be Chris from MicroAcres Wales - a vertical urban farm using environmentally controlled farming to produce microgreens which are young vegetables and herbs that can be used in restaurants. Also a beautiful range of edible flowers.

Everyone is very welcome.
