April Guest Speaker Report

Our speaker this month was Gill Lewis from Barry Floral Arranger`s Society who gave us a demonstration on the art of flower arranging. Gill brought with her a selection of flowers and foliage, and a variety of containers to display her creations.

As it was going to be a very busy evening, Gill had prepared a few arrangements beforehand, and described what she had used to create and display them. She then went on to demonstrate how she plans each arrangement – style of the display, choice of colour scheme, the container to be used, which varieties of flowers would be suitable, whether the foliage will be complimentary or contrasting, and the quantity to use.

As Gill worked through her arrangements, she talked us through each stage and gave us many helpful hints and tips as to how to prepare and condition the flowers, and what to put in the containers to hold the arrangements in place once complete. She also showed us how to manipulate leaves to create different shapes and effects – all very clever!!

Gill managed to create 14 arrangements, all very beautiful, and all very different. These were raffled off at the end of the evening and so a lot of people went home very happy. It was a very good turn-out and we thank everyone for attending. But the biggest thanks go to Gill for a wonderful evening. Her creations were outstanding and we learnt a lot. Now all we need to do is to create our own for the Society`s annual show in August!!
